Tildown 1.0
The first public version of Tildown went online on 22 July. Today, version 1.0 comes out. In between there were 365 versions, many of them small steps, a few of them big ones. For a game that keeps growing in the browser every day, 1.0 is less an ending than a promise: what is there should feel finished.
What 1.0 means to us
A big new building would have been the obvious choice for 1.0. We deliberately decided against it. The last few weeks went almost entirely into things you ideally never notice: your city should be there when you come back, the sound should not disappear, and every tap should do exactly what you expect.
Above all on iPhone and iPad
- Safari clears a site’s storage if you do not visit it for about a week. If you came back after that, you found an empty city even though your old one was safe in the cloud. Now the game finds it again, no account needed.
- After switching apps or taking a call, Tildown could stay silent until you reloaded. Now the sound comes back with your next tap.
- The “Share” button on the postcard now reliably opens the share sheet.
- If you put Tildown on your home screen, the status cards at the top are readable again and the city reaches all the way to the bottom edge.
That may sound like small things. But if you come back from a week’s holiday and find your city waiting for you, you probably see it differently.
A fresh look once more
Before the release, we played Tildown the way someone does for the first time: on a phone and on a computer, from the first road to a city of more than 40,000 residents. That turns up things you stop seeing after months on your own game. The hint card above the toolbar let a tap go through to the city underneath, so tapping it away could buy land by accident. And three tasks got stuck without saying why. The industrial area of six tiles, for example, often sat at 3 of 6 in dense cities.
Both are fixed. On top of that, all game texts in the six languages have been reviewed once more, down to using the same words for the same things.
What stays the same
Tildown stays a calm game. There are no timers, no game over and no disasters that take your city away. The real opponent is traffic, and the best moments are the small celebrations, when the first train runs or your city receives its city charter. Tildown runs right in your browser, on your phone as well as on your computer, and it costs nothing.
What comes next
After 1.0, things continue in smaller steps. Next up is the university, a campus for the big city. Alongside that, big cities should run even more smoothly on phones. What changes in detail is, as always, on the updates page.
Thank you
Thank you to everyone who has played along over these three months, and especially to everyone who wrote to us when something was not right. Many points in this release go back to messages like that. If you notice something, write to us at kontakt@tildown.com.
